Seeds, Pellets Or Both? What Do You Feed a Parrot?

Seeds, Pellets Or Both? What Do You Feed a Parrot?

Parrots that are in the wild have a built-in instinct to take care of themselves. They eat an assortment of food, consisting of a mixture of seeds, fruits, nuts, flowers and even insects. Depending on the season and what is available to find food that will promote a healthy well balance diet they seem to know the importance of proper nutrition.

What you feed your parrot is important to its health. Malnutrition I’m sorry to say is the number one cause of death in pet parrots, because the food he is eating is not providing him with the nutrients his body. A poor diet can lead to many health problems such as fungal, bacterial and viral infections and also behavior problems. Making sure your parrot has a healthy diet will ensure his immune system is strong so he will be able to fight off any sickness.

You want to feed your parrot a diet that is nutritionally balanced.

His main meal which is basically what he eats everyday and it should provide a mixture of ingredients as he would find being out in the wild. Offer a variety of high-quality seed mixture, and high quality pellets, throughout the day offer fruits and vegetables. You should feed your bird his basic meals twice a day in the morning and early evening and give plenty of snack food in between.

Seed, Pellets or Both?

Parrot owners have difference of opinion when it comes to and all seed or an all pellet diet. They both are nutritious but not as the only meal. An all seed diet does not have enough calcium and phosphorus, which could lead to a calcium deficiency. And you won’t find much vitamin (A) in a seed mixture, and that nutrient is essential to the bird’s immune system. You want to make sure that both are premium and high quality products and to make a well balance meal don’t forget the fruits and veggies, also you may want to add supplements to their diet.

Parrots forage for their food when they are in the wild and this should be encouraged with your bird as well. Not only will you be providing other nourishes food but this will also help them not to become bored and is also important to his mental health. Try hanging some fruit or hide some vegetables in their favorite toys for them to find. Try to use organic produce if at all possible and with any fresh food after so long a time they may become rancid and may attract other little pests so only leave them in your parrots’ cage so long and then remove them.

Your parrots crave a selection of foods in his diet. And with a little persistence you will discover what makes him both happy and healthy.

You should not be giving your parrot any kind of food that has food coloring or artificial flavors in them. Of course it should go without saying that you should always provide them fresh drinking water and their water dishes are cleaned and refilled daily. If your parrot likes to soak food you might have to change it more often. Nuts are good but should only be given as treats; greens are also a necessary part of your parrots’ diet kale, mustard and collard greens are wonderful.

Cooked pasta, rice and beans in small amounts are also good. Avoid food that are high in sodium and sugar and you should never give a bird avocados, alcohol or chocolate which contains caffeine.

So when you sit down to have your dinner; why not invite your companion parrot to eat with you. They are after all social creatures and this would be a good way to bond with them by sharing your dinner as long as you are eating healthy, offer them a little portion.

Bon appétit.
